Xtrachrispy's Clone Trooper

In just 2 weeks I should be getting my Clone Trooper kit. I have begun work on various other pieces that i will need to complete the suit, I got the itch bad and gotta work on something and it might as well be stuff i am gonna have to make any way.

First i made a neck seal. I cut the sleeves out of an under armor shirt, then stitched them together, with strips of foamies foam, to form the ridges. I love the ribbed look of the clones under suit and will eventually make an entire under suit and better neck seal that is vertical ribbed. However, I think this will do for now:

Next I started working on the belt, that heat was gracious enough to donate to me. In the end I do not know if i will be able to use it but if nothing else it gives me practice working with the material.

First I rough cut out all of the pieces.

then used a heat gun (for the first time ever) to warp the belt pieces into a curve shape. This proved to be a big challenge because when bending the pieces the would pinch at the curve. So I would curve the piece then heat the sides and try to flatten them out.

With the belt pieces curved, I then trimmed up the front 2 belt boxes to see how they would look. Now i have to find a good way to attach them. Due to the irregular shape of the belt it is impossible to make the boxes completely flush with the belt (without doing an insane amount of bondo work) So I am thinking I may add a strip of plastic onto the underside of the boxes then screw that into the belt. We'll just have to see about that later.

Started working on leather straps for the shoulders. It is a pain cutting those little rectangles out of leather. Going to try doing the top layer in foam with the bottom layer in leather. then glue them together, plasti-dip and paint.

Also started on a pair of shoes. They are not flat soled so they will have to be replaced eventually. Working on the pieces that go over the shoe now.

Awesome event! We started to arrive around 9:00 and began to set up. Nice weather, not too hot. This is the first time we have done this event with Siskin and they were very excited to have us. We stayed to one side of the event since we were told that some of the children that would be there were absolutely frightened of costumes, but didn't see any problems. Event was only a couple of hours and it went by fast. Got a new recruit (Kevin), and I'm sure you will see more of him soon! After we all went to Cancuns for lunch. Thank you so much for everyone that participated and expecially Jonathan, Don and Raychel for making the long journey down to Chattanooga to troop with us.
Wasn't planning on walking (in costume), but Cindy Sharrock and Patrick were there and he wanted to go. Bob and I headed out on the walk with them, but Patrick sped off in his wheelchair leaving us in the dust! As we got about half way we could see him coming down the other side so we intercepted him and headed back. Oh, and there was a swinging bridge....not good, lol.

Well, the weather held out and it turned out to be a nice (but humid) day. Good turn out, but my mistake, thought this one was like Kids Day at Coolidge Park....NOT. It was fun anyway, mostly "good for your health" type stuff and lots and lots of dogs for adoption. We stayed from 10 am until about 3:30pm (event was until 4:00), and then decided to go eat. We all headed over to Cancun which we think may be our "official" dinner spot when we do events downtown since it seems we always end up there. Little Patrick Sharrock and his mom Cindy (Extreme Makeover Home winners) joined us and of course Patrick was the entertainment for the evening with his jokes.

As some are aware I have been building a new and improved Chewie over the last few months/years. I'm making the mold for my new mechanical mask this week. Here is my new sculpt. I did it in Monster Clay, which I highly recommend. I used to use Klean Clay but I have to say this new monster clay is very nice. Holds detail well but still pliable.
Here are the photos of the finished sculpt:
I'm laying up the fiberglass mold this week (four part mold, 1 front piece, two rear pieces, and a core) and hope to cast the skin and skull this weekend. The skin will be Dragon Skin with slacker ( a deadener) and will be about 1/4" thick. This will be mounted on a rigid foam underskull that will have the mechanical jaw and lip wire mechanisms. Hair will be punched in with a crown punching needles (much faster than traditional hair punching forks).

So I was lurking around ebay a few weeks back and ran up on a helemt that I always wanted...and a costume as well the Royal Guard! It was cheap and over all I thought it would be a nice quick costume for CVI. So I got the bucket. I started researching while I waited....ok stop here....

To all the newbies....please research said costume BEFORE you buy anything. Yep...I did something I knew better to do. ok let's go back....

....this is when I found out about how some buckets are to small. Now I knew the Don Post was very small so I knew that was a no go. So I got my bucket last week....NICE bucket...BUT I can't get my big head in past the neck of the bucket.

Lord Reign's Sith Inquisitor Build

**copied over from my RPF post.**

I have begun construction of A Sith Inquisitor set from SWTOR. I am modeling the suit after the concept image below. This is my first ever attempt at any sort of Pepekura / foam/ whatever else this is build. I have costume sewing and leatherworking experience but that is it. I gladly welcome any comments or advice on the project. Also a special shout out to a few people who have made resources and techniques available that I have learned from: Fierfek, StewYZF750, Moose, and Stealth & Del Ray from the Hero tutorials.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6926063645/in/photostream

I first started with sketching out the 4 pieces I would need to construct the shoulders. I then cut the pieces out of EVA foam, used a foam edge cutter to angle the edges, and hot glued them together.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6926063653/in/photostream/

Next, I decided I wanted the Shoulders to have some extra strength to them and to feel more like “armor”, so I decided to Bondo them. (This may later prove to be a mistake, again this is my first attempt at any of this and is real trial and error right now.) I had tried using Smooth-Cast 321 but was not happy with the test results using it. Shoulders are Bondo’d and sanded down.

I do not sand them completely smooth because I want this suit to have a weathered and used look to it. Also you can see a Sith helmet I am also making in the background in that last photo.

Next, I decided to apply a layer of Plasti-dip, probably an unnecessary step.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6926063669/in/photostream/

After the Plasti-Dip dries for 24hours I apply a base coat. I use Rustoleum “Hammered metal” for the base coat.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6779951156/in/photostream/

After that dries I apply my black and red paints to the piece. Agai I want it to look like a used piece of battle armor so I did not want the paint to look perfect, I wanted it to be very rough, almost primal looking. He’s way to busy killing Jedi to worry about smooth trim paint lines J

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6926068423/in/photostream/

The shoulder’s construction now complete I move on. Next, I designed the front, rear, and side belt boxes. They were then cut out of “Foamies” and hot glued together.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6779951810/in/photostream

I made a mistake in the side belt boxes as I thought the hoses also went through them but they only go through the front and back belt boxes. I have decided I will replace them later if I do not like the way they look.

Next I design and construct the Forearm guards much in the same way I did the shoulders, just a little smaller and with the wrist indention.

I have decided that for the rest of the suit Bondo is really not needed, so the pieces are plasti-dipped and after drying they are painted.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6779953218/in/photostream

I add a few LED lights to the front belt box. I may add some to the other pieces at a later time.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6779951342/in/photostream

Now I begin on the hard part, the torso. I sat in front of my laptop for hours sketchy up various ways to build it.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/29558447@N03/6779951506/in/photostream

I finally decide the best way to build it is to build a tank top out of foam first then add the various layers on top of that base. I realize that my office trash can makes a pretty good torso mannequin so I use it, I had a duct tape mannequin but it exploded.

http://www.flickr.co.../in/photostream

And that’s where I am now, in the designing stage of the torso, more to come soon…

*********************03/10/2012 UPDATE******************
Started work on the torso.

A whole lot of measuring, sketching, second guessing, measuring, cutting, gluing and measuring.

Shoulder bell next to torso.

Shoulders are going to be attached to torso via canvas strap at the top, and elastic on the sides, each glued to the under side of the shoulder and torso. This will make them secure but mobile so I can have full range of motion.

Added buckles down the right side. The idea was with them there i could dress myself completely, but that didn't really work out...

*********************03/31/2012 UPDATE******************

Had attached buckles to the right side. Didn't like it, so I ripped out the entire right side and re-did it. The buckles are now in the back.

The main torso piece is now wearable and has been Plasti-dip'd.

Began construction on belt.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/2955844...in/photostream

***************April 2nd Update*********************

Finished the shoulder bells. Right now they are attached to the torso via a strap and velcro, but will be glues on after the torso is done.

http://www.flickr.co...N03/7041878439/

"Finished" the belt and the flaps but they are way to big. Obviously the concept art is not to human scale and I did not reference my belt boxes when measuring the belt and flaps. So I am just going to trim down the belt and flaps so they are the right size, a little annoying and will cost me a fair amount of time, but that's the price you pay for not checking EVERYTHING first.

http://www.flickr.co...N03/7041878613/

Began work on the cowl. Measured and drew the design on graph paper, then transferred that to card stock paper for durability. The cowl is not going to be as hard as I thought, although it did take a few hours to finish the drawings. The cowl will also run down the back of the torso covering the buckles. The cowl will be velcro'd to the torso at the shoulders and back to keep it in place.

http://www.flickr.co...N03/7041878483/

Designed the back plate that will go on the back torso portion of the cowl. It will be a raised box with recessed details, and will probably light up as well. I am going to scrap the bar graph in the bottom right and extend the vents in the bottum left acrross the entire bottom.

http://www.flickr.co...N03/7041878677/

After the torso is finished and painted, and the belts are re sized, all that will be left are the skirt ant the flaps that drop down in front of it.

Mission Report - Chattanooga Business Expo 2012

Can I say...tough troop? Honestly, this was definately a "working" troop. We arrived around 9-9:30 and were greeted by staff of Chattanooga Business Machines. Headed to the dressing room, and got a very nice surprise there when we saw two coolers full of snacks. As soon as we were ready we went to their booth and were told that we would be taking pictures there and one trooper would make rounds (with their girl) to get people to come to the booth. Now this event was BUSY. No, not with kids, but with adults all coming by to get their pictures with us. We were pretty much stuck at the booth all day, but did get a nice sack lunch provided to us. We did have to take turns going to lunch and I'm not really sure if we got a break....it's all a daze. Although we did work that day, the people at Chattanooga Business Machines treated us terrific. They provided so much food, that the four us us could never have eaten it all. Our hard work did pay off for them too, as they won "Best Booth" at the event. They also donated $1,000.00 to Big Brother Big Sisters in the 501st Legions name.

In attendance were:

Trent - TK
Alex - Snowy
Janie - Officer
