Comments: The Nashville Congenital Heart Walk raises awareness of and funding for the world’s most common birth defect – congenital heart disease (CHD). Proceeds benefit The Children’s Heart Foundation and Adult Congenital Heart Association.
The Children’s Heart Foundation is the leading provider of funding for CHD research and to date, has funded almost $10 million in research projects at leading institutions in the U.S., Europe and Canada. CHD affects 1 in 100 babies each year and is the leading cause of birth defect related death in infants. Thanks to medical advancements, more adults than children are now living with CHD. However, research remains grossly underfunded compared to the prevalence of CHD in our community.
The Adult Congenital Heart Association is the only organization solely dedicated to providing resources to and advocacy for adults living with CHD. Despite many beliefs, there is no cure for CHD, not even surgery, and patients need lifelong care with an Adult Congenital Heart Disease specialist. Unfortunately, less than 10% of adults with CHD are receiving the recommended care.
The Nashville Congenital Heart Walk is an opportunity for patients, families and medical professionals to come together to honor or remember those they love affected by CHD. We have games, food, music, and raffles. This year’s theme will be a red carpet and movie theme so we want to make these attendees feel extra special because it’s all about them!
